A stapler is a mechanical device that joins pages of paper or similar material by driving a thin metal staple through the sheets and folding the ends. Staplers are widely used in government, business, offices, work places, homes and schools.
Stick the paperclip into the head of the stapler from the outside if you can't get the top open. See if you can remove the jammed staple by pulling it down. Insert the flat end of a flat-head screwdriver into the mouth of the stapler if you can't get the top part of the stapler open. Most stapler problems are caused by rough use, such as slamming the top of the stapler down with your palm instead of gripping both sides of the stapler carefully as you press down gently.
If you need to fix a stapler the process is usually simple, but in some cases it could be damaged beyond a basic repair. Why do staplers have two settings on the base plate for the direction in which the staple bends? The other setting , the one that splays the staple points outward, is for temporarily attaching papers that are intended to be separated again.
Hold the paper in place and align the top arm over the spine. Hold the booklet in place with your hands or by placing a heavy object on top of each side. Align the stapler arm so the head of the stapler is oriented in the middle of the booklet , where you'd like the first staple to be. Most heavy-duty staplers have a button on the back that releases a spring. When you press the button, the mechanism that holds the staples pops out of the front. Insert a row of new staples and push the mechanism back in the stapler.
Gather the stack of paper that you want to staple. Release the loading latch at the end the stapler and pull the slide open. Lay a stick of staples in the loading channel with the legs of the staples facing up. Push the slide in until the loading latch clicks and catches. Place a sleeve of heavy duty staples into the carrying tray, prongs facing downward.
On most Bostitch models, a visual aid will be printed on or near the tray to help with loading. Replace the follow block in its cradle and depress the top of it until the spring begins to compress. Cheap staples that are made of thin, softer wire and have blunt points are most likely to bend, crumple and fail to penetrate the layers of paper.
Position the Boston stapler so it is on a flat surface, with the back of the stapler facing you. Lift up and then push in the thin metal latch located on the black staple-holding box. As you do this, the staple box will be unlocked and will release toward you. Insert heavy-duty staples into the staple holder, pushing back on the spring that feeds the staples forward until the staples are loaded.
