Westboro church san diego

Editor's note: Westboro Baptist Church, headed by Fred Phelps, has gained notoriety for protesting at funerals of gay individuals. In San Diego, however, on October 16 the group which calls Jews "Christ killers" plans to target Jewish schools and organizations.

I might have let their presence pass without anything more than a tsk-tsk, knowing their words speak more loudly against them than anything anyone else could say. Our children's school, however, is on their picket schedule, so that children from pre-school on will have to pass this group's picketing in order to get to class in the morning.

Skip to main content. Westboro has protested funerals of soldiers and slain Sandy Hook elementary students. Its inflammatory hate speech targets gays and lesbians, Jews, Muslims, Catholics and others. There were actually more members of the news media present than protesters. Elsewhere around the county, three of the adult protesters from Kansas and two of their children showed up in the afternoon across the street from San Diego High School.

Hundreds of counterprotesters, many of them from San Diego's gay community, were on the school's side of the street. The Kansas group, which was ringed by five San Diego police officers, was hard-pressed to get out their message because they were surrounded by news media.

Lawsuits and legislation have sought to shut down their protests at funerals, but the Supreme Court upheld free speech rights for Westboro as constitutional.

Across the nation, counter-protests have often been held wherever Westboro pickets occur. Kazoos, chants and songs have been utilized by some activists to drown out angry chants by Westboro picketers. I hope community members come out to join in supporting the students and not the protesters. Kat Wolfdancer calls for a peaceful rally. Dam do you all hear yourselves, get the patriot guards lol, get somebody,to protect these kids, and the community.

Hey got idea get off your butts do it yourselves, all you have to do is form a tight circle around these ppl, and if one bumps you, then.. Westboro Baptist does that to the tee, everything that comes out their mouth to you, if your immediate thought isn't violence, then dunno lol but dam don't expect other's to do what you should be doing.. Sure hate to see these despicable, immoral people coming to East County.

Please donate to the Patriot Guard Riders who protect the families of fallen soldiers from the hate this group spreads.
